Ranked Choice Voting!
Kevin Anderson and Bonnie Westlin lead the charge in discussing the benefits of ranked choice voting, which is a proven electoral system that gives voters more choice and voice in their democracy, rewards candidates who find common ground and build consensus, eliminates spoiler and wasted vote dynamics, and assures that winners have broad popular support. Ranked choice voting (RCV), also known as instant-runoff voting, is an electoral system in which voters rank candidates in order of preference. In a traditional election, voters choose only one candidate, and the candidate with the most votes wins. However, in ranked choice voting, voters rank multiple candidates according to their preference, typically using numbers (1 for first choice, 2 for second choice, and so on). Here's how ranked choice voting works: Ranking Candidates: Voters rank their preferred candidates in the order they like them. They can rank as many or as few candidates as they wish. Counting the First Choices: In the initial count, only the first-choice votes are tallied. If a candidate receives an outright majority (more than 50% of the votes), they win. Elimination of Lowest Candidate: If no candidate has a majority, the candidate with the fewest first-choice votes is eliminated. The second-choice votes on the ballots of the eliminated candidate are then distributed to the remaining candidates. Recounting and Elimination: The process of eliminating the lowest candidate and redistributing their votes continues until one candidate achieves a majority. Winner Determination: The candidate who finally accumulates a majority of the votes wins the election. Ranked choice voting aims to ensure that the winning candidate has broader support among the voters. It can also lead to reduced negative campaigning since candidates may want to be a voter's second or third choice even if they aren't the first choice. RCV is used in various elections, including local elections, primaries, and even in some national elections in certain countries. It is believed to encourage more diverse and representative outcomes, discourage strategic voting, and provide a more accurate reflection of voter preferences.
