Abortion Fact Check Minnesota Late Term Abortion
Abortions occurring later in pregnancy are indeed a rarity in Minnesota. According to fifteen years of statistics from the Minnesota Department of Health website, only six abortions were performed past the 30-week gestational age mark, accounting for a minuscule 0.004% of all abortions in the state.
Senator Alice Mann, a Bloomington Democrat and emergency room doctor, explained that these rare late-term abortions were due to severe fetal abnormalities discovered during routine prenatal examinations, rendering the baby incompatible with life. She emphasized that these decisions are not made lightly, with women typically not waiting several months before opting for such procedures.
Sen. Mann supported the abortion law passed in 2023, which aimed to destigmatize and remove barriers for women already grappling with the grief of such situations. According to her, the law simply empowers women to make their own medical decisions in consultation with their doctors, without unnecessary interference.
